North Crawford Behavior Management Program
At North Crawford Elementary School, staff members use a behavior management program based on the “Above The Line” program developed by Corwin Kronenberg.
The plan involves four main components:
1. My Job/Your Job
2. Work, Respect, Belong
3. Above The Line/Below The Line/Bottom Line
4. Fix-It Plans
Teachers should direct the following activities at the beginning of each school year:
· Teachers should conduct a class meeting to establish a mission for their class
· Teachers should work with students to decide which activities/responsibilities students believe are part of their jobs
(be to school on time, complete homework, treat students with respect, etc.)
· Teachers should work with students to decide which activities/responsibilities they believe are the responsibility of the teacher
(treat students fairly, correct homework, include all students, etc.)
· The class spends time discussing three rules: Work, Respect, Belong
(we use these as our three standard rules, as all other rules fall into one of these three categories)
· Teachers should discuss with students the behavior categories:
Above the Line – appropriate behavior
Below the Line – inappropriate behavior
Bottom Line – infractions of law, district policy
Students will brainstorm what “Above the Line”, “Below the Line”, and “Bottom Line” behavior looks like. Students will also understand that “Bottom Line” behavior results in an automatic referral to Mr. Munson.
· Teachers should explain to students the “Fix-It Plan” that they will complete when displaying “Below the Line” behavior
Our behavior policy is based on the students’ GOOD BEHAVIOR, along with the students being responsible for their own behavior.
If a student’s behavior goes below the line, the student is required to come up with a “Fix-It” to correct their problem. If the student fixes their problem, they go back above the line. If the student fails to fix the problem, an appropriate consequence will be given that is RELATED to the behavior, delivered RESPECTFULLY, and is REASONABLE.
“Bottom Line” behaviors are not tolerated and are given a consequence that “fits the offense.” Consequences will be given by the principal, with input from the teacher and parents.
A student will bring home a behavior slip if they go “Below the Line” or their behavior is “Bottom Line”. The sheet will explain the behavior and what the student did to fix their behavior. Parents are also asked to discuss the behavior with their child and come up with other possible “Fix-Its.” These should be written on the form. The signed form must be returned to school the next day.
Students that demonstrate “Above the Line” behavior for the week will be entered into a weekly drawing. One male and one female student from the primary (K – 3), intermediate (4 – 6), and junior high (7 – 8) will receive an “Above the Line” writstband, and their picture and name in the newspaper.
The behavior program will be used by all staff members, including administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, bus drivers, and food service staff. “Above the Line” behavior will be reinforced in the classroom, in the hallways, on the playground, and on the bus.
