Title I

Learn About Title I

What is Title I?

Title 1 is a federally funded program, intended to help students living in high poverty areas succeed academically. The amount of money schools receive through Title I is based upon the number of students that qualify and receive free or reduced lunches.

Although the funding is based on the area’s poverty level, any child attending the school may receive Title 1 services.

How are children selected to receive Title I help?

Children are recommended for help by their classroom teachers. Now that we are a schoolwide Title 1 school, students may work with Title 1 teachers whenever the teachers decide that it would benefit the student.

Who are the Title I teachers?

Kay Lynch teaches students in the areas of math, reading, and writing. Mrs. Lynch has a Reading Teacher license. She has worked in the district since 1978. Sue Presser works with students that have needs in reading and writing. Ms. Presser has a Reading Specialist license. She has worked at North Crawford since 1998. Our Title 1 teachers often work closely together, sharing ideas and strategies and planning literacy-based activities.

How does Title I affect your child?

In many cases the Title 1 teachers at North Crawford work in the regular classrooms, along with the classroom teachers during reading, writing, and math instruction, raising the teacher to student ratio. Having a second teacher in the classroom can benefit all the children in the class. Often the students are divided into two groups and each teacher will lead one group. Groups alternate so all kids get equal time with each teacher. Groups change frequently (flexible-grouping). At other times, the Title I teacher may team teach alongside the classroom teacher.

Do the Title I teachers work with some children outside of the children's classrooms?

Children with greater needs will often have individual or small group sessions with a Title 1 teacher. Instruction is tailored to the needs of the specific student or small group.

What else do Title I teachers do?

Our Title 1 teachers work with other teachers and parent volunteers to plan and carry out literacy activities, such as book fairs, author visits, writing festivals, and more, for the school.
