Robert L. Ghormley
English teacher, Theater director, Forensics coach
Rob Ghormley is a great lover of English, Shakespeare and of theater. He has been an English teacher and Theater director in public schools for 24 years and is currently in his fourteenth year at North Crawford. Rob has taught seven summer terms as an adjunct professor of Shakespeare for Upper Iowa University.
Generally, Rob has daily responsibility to teach English 9, English 10, American Lit, and Novels. He recently initiated a new Shakespeare/Theater course, which runs every two years. As Forensics coach for five years, Rob has assisted many students each year to achieve gold and silver medal standings at the State Forensics competition.
Now his fourteenth year as theater director of the North Crawford Playhouse, Rob has now directed 62 productions, including many technically difficult musicals: Les Miserables, Ragtime, Beauty and the Beast, and Little Shop of Horrors. Under his direction, the Playhouse began in 2006 to rent out our beautiful costumes all over the U.S. and Canada, with the aid of the Internet and of Cele Wolf and her army of community volunteers. These funds have allowed the Playhouse to expand and run largely without school funding.
In 1996, Rob and Joni Peterson inaugurated the Spring Play as an extracurricular program, which has brought to our stage many of Shakespeare’s best plays: King Lear, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Each year hundreds of area school students come to North Crawford to see our plays, which are largely chosen from standard English curriculum.
Rob was awarded the Kohl Fellowship Award in 1994. For three school years, 2005-08, Rob served on the union negotiations committee of the North Crawford Education Association. He received, in 1984, his Master’s in Education from the University of Houston with teaching certification in English, French, and English as a Second Language. He achieved, in 1980, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Environmental Design from Brigham Young University; and, in 1975, graduated from Mary Carroll High School in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Rob has served voluntarily 1998- 2005, as Branch President of the Viroqua Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served two years voluntarily in France and Belgium, 1976-78, as missionary for his church. He speaks French fluently.
Rob adores his lovely wife, Rebekah, and his six beautiful children: Adam, Sethany, Christopher, Emily, Dylan, and Brennah. He owes all of his successes to their loving support and tireless patience. Rob also enjoys star gazing, old house restoration, and summers off!
