Les Miserables Unit Set Design Plans
We are offering for $25 a set of detailed drawings for the construction of a remarkably versatile twin turntable set that accommodates all the scenes for Les Miserables, (barracades, yard gates, bridge, slum streets, tavern, etc ) with only one small set piece to hide in the wings, making it ideal for use on a small stage with no wing space. The turntables require absolutely a space 13 feet x 30 feet for their operation. You will need at least another 10 feet in front of them for your actors.
The cost will run about $1500 for materials at your local lumber yard, for casters, plywood, lumber, screws etc. You will need an experienced carpenter, as the set has many moving parts and must be solidly built to hold a large cast. The 12 foot walls in the center of each turntable fold down into the space between the turntables to form the barricade. Then rotate the turntables to access two barred gates which fill the center space for Valjean's yard gate. The bridge is made by again rotating the turntables to align the bridge landings and the bridge (shown here on floor at center) is rolled in from backstage and lifted and set to a 4 foot height between the turntables. Javert's suicide is done by falling backward from this bridge, the student rally, Gavroche sings his street scene, Eponine sings "On My Own" from the bridge.
